Cancer's glyph shows two curled forms — read as the crab's claws, a pair of breasts, or two spirals of enfolding — depicting protection, containment and the doubling-back of memory.

The Cancer archetype

Cancer begins the second quarter of the zodiac at the summer solstice — the turn inward, toward roots, family and the emotional foundation beneath a visible life. As cardinal water it initiates through feeling: it acts to nurture, protect and belong. Cancer knows the world through emotional resonance and memory rather than through argument.

Ruled by the Moon, Cancer is the archetype of the mother, the home and the ancestral tide. Its hard shell protects a great sensitivity; it moves sideways, indirectly, and retreats when the emotional weather turns.

Cancer in the birth chart

A planet in Cancer operates through care, feeling and instinct. It is receptive, protective and shaped by mood and memory, and it attaches deeply to what it loves. Wherever Cancer falls by house is where the chart seeks emotional security, tends and nurtures, and is most easily wounded.

Through its natural link to the Fourth House, Cancer is tied to home, family, ancestry and the innermost private self — the ground a person returns to.

Strengths and shadow

Cancer offers tenderness, loyalty, emotional intelligence and a genuine capacity to hold and protect others. Its shadow is moodiness, clinging, defensiveness and an over-identification with the past. The growth edge, shown by opposite sign Capricorn, is learning to stand in the outer world with authority and structure rather than retreating into the shell whenever exposure is required.

The ruler: the Moon

The Moon gives Cancer its emotional nature, its receptivity and its rhythmic ebb and flow. Cancer is the Moon most fully at home — feeling, remembering and caretaking. The Moon’s placement shows how the Cancerian function seeks safety and gives nurture.
