The Mars archetype
Mars is the principle of will in action — the energy that asserts, pursues, defends and desires. It governs how a person goes after what they want, how they fight, and how they meet obstacles and conflict. Mars is raw drive, neither good nor bad in itself; its expression depends entirely on how it is channelled.
Its archetype is the warrior: courage, aggression and the force that cuts a path.
Mars in the birth chart
Mars’s sign describes how a person asserts themselves and pursues desire; its house shows the arena where they most readily act and compete; its aspects show whether that drive flows cleanly or is blocked, frustrated or explosive. Mars is the significator of anger, sexuality and physical courage.
Rulership and dignity
Mars rules Aries, where drive is direct and pioneering, and traditionally Scorpio, where it turns deep, strategic and intense. It is exalted in Capricorn, where raw energy is disciplined into effective action, and in detriment in Libra and Taurus — the peace-loving signs of Venus.
