The Lilith archetype
Black Moon Lilith is not a physical object but a point in space — the apogee of the Moon’s orbit, the spot where it is farthest from the Earth. Astrologers read it through the myth of Lilith, the first woman who refused to submit and was exiled: the archetype of raw instinct, sexual autonomy, and everything in the self that will not be domesticated or shamed into compliance.
It marks where a person is uncompromising — and where they may have been rejected, or rejected themselves, for that very refusal.
Lilith in the birth chart
Lilith’s sign and house describe the arena of the untamed self — where a person feels a fierce, non-negotiable authenticity, and where they may carry a wound of exile, taboo or shame. Its aspects show which parts of the psyche this raw power touches. Reclaimed, Lilith is instinctual strength and the refusal to betray oneself; unintegrated, it can turn to rage, repression or self-sabotage.
A note on Liliths
Several distinct points share the name Lilith — Mean and True Black Moon (the apogee), the hypothetical asteroid Lilith (1181), and the "Dark Moon" Waldemath. Ocean Gull uses Black Moon Lilith (the lunar apogee), the most widely used in modern practice.
