What the Twelfth House governs

The Twelfth House is the most hidden ground of the chart: the unconscious, dreams and the inner life beyond the ego, solitude and retreat, spirituality and mysticism, and — in the traditional lexicon — confinement, self-undoing, hidden enemies and the "houses of sorrow." It is where the separate self dissolves back toward the whole.

A cadent house of great subtlety, it deals with what is unseen, surrendered or transcended.

The Twelfth House in the birth chart

The cusp sign and ruler describe a person’s relationship to solitude, the unconscious and the transcendent, and where they may undo themselves or seek retreat. Planets in the Twelfth often work quietly, behind the scenes or through the inner life; they can feel elusive, needing conscious retrieval, and frequently carry spiritual or compassionate gifts.

The Twelfth / Sixth axis

The Twelfth House of dissolution and the soul opposes the Sixth House of order and the body. The axis runs from being to doing, from the hidden inner life to the visible daily task, from surrender to service. Healing and burnout both live along this line.
