What the Second House governs
The Second House concerns what a person owns and, more subtly, what a person values. Traditionally it rules money, movable possessions and income earned by one’s own hand. Psychologically it extends to self-worth — the felt sense of one’s own value that underlies the ability to attract and hold resources.
It is the first of the succedent houses, houses of holding and stabilising, and it follows naturally from the First: having established a self, the chart now asks what that self can sustain and keep.
The Second House in the birth chart
The sign on the cusp and its ruler describe the person’s relationship to money and security — how it is earned, held or spent — and what they genuinely treasure. Planets in the Second are drawn into the material and value dimension of life; Venus or Jupiter here can ease resources, while Saturn may make security a lifelong theme of effort.
The Second / Eighth axis
The Second House of one’s own resources opposes the Eighth House of shared and other people’s resources. The axis runs from what I hold alone to what I share, merge or inherit — from self-worth to intimacy and mortality. Financial and value tensions often live along this line.
