What the Fourth House governs

The Fourth House is the foundation of the chart — literally its base, the Imum Coeli (IC). It rules home, family, ancestry and the emotional roots from which a life grows, as well as the private, innermost self known only to oneself. In traditional astrology it also signifies the father or the family line, land and property, and the end of matters.

As an angular house it carries great weight; the IC is the deep, hidden counterpart to the public Midheaven.

The Fourth House in the birth chart

The cusp sign and ruler describe the emotional foundation, the childhood home and the ancestral inheritance a person carries. Planets in the Fourth work through family, memory and the need for a secure base; the Moon or Saturn here can make roots and belonging central themes of the life.

The Fourth / Tenth axis

The Fourth House of private roots opposes the Tenth House of public standing. This vertical axis — IC to Midheaven — runs from where one comes from to what one becomes, from home to career, from the inner base to the outer summit. The two are always in dialogue.
