The brightest star of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, and the upper of the two "Pointer Stars" of the Big Dipper — the pair whose line, drawn out, finds Polaris and so the celestial north. Its name comes from the Arabic for "the bear." Golden-yellow and of the second magnitude, it has marked the slow turning of the northern vault for as long as travelers have steered by it.
Dubhe's nature is Martian: forceful, willful, commanding. The tradition grants it power, self-confidence, and psychic sensitivity, together with a capacity to lead — or to destroy — depending on where the will is bent. Conjunctions to natal points lend that point drive and a pointing, directional quality, the gift of showing others the way, but also a hardness that has to be governed.
As part of the Great Bear, Dubhe belongs to the oldest sky-myth of all: the circumpolar guardian that never sets, the still hub around which the heavens wheel. Where the Royal Stars test honor at the four corners of the year, the Bear-stars speak of orientation itself — knowing true north, holding the bearing, guarding what does not change.
Manifests as: leadership and the power to direct, strong will, psychic or instinctive insight, a guiding role; where character fails, domineering force, anger, or ruthlessness.
