What the square is

A square is an angular separation of 90° — one-quarter of the circle. It is the classic "hard" aspect: the two planets are at cross-purposes, creating friction, tension and a sense of obstacle. The signs involved share the same modality but clash in element, so the energies pull against each other.

Yet the square is not simply "bad." The friction it generates is precisely what forces effort, adaptation and growth — it is the aspect of achievement.

How the square works

A square demands action. The two planets cannot easily coexist, so the person feels an internal or external pressure that must be worked out through effort. Unaddressed, squares show up as recurring conflict, frustration or self-defeating patterns; consciously engaged, they build competence, resilience and drive. The most accomplished charts are often full of squares.

By transit and synastry

By transit, a square marks a crisis point in a cycle — a moment of decisive tension that calls for action or adjustment. In synastry it shows where two people challenge and provoke each other; such contacts create friction but also energy and attraction. The square is dynamic, not static.
